Albuquerque Family Vacations
Overview
My family and I keep returning to Albuquerque because of its
mix of Native, Hispanic and Anglo cultures, intriguing hands-on
museums and exciting adventures, all set against a scenic southwest
landscape where the sun shines 310 days per year.
And did we mention history? Albuquerque has centuries of it.
In 1706, 70 years before the American Revolution, the Spanish
settled what we now call "Old Town." Learn about the
Hispanic legacy as well as view art exhibits and attend dance
and music performances at the National Hispanic Cultural Center.
The petroglyps in Albuquerque's parks prove the presence of Native
Americans eons ago while the 19 pueblos surrounding the city attest
to the Native Americans' still vibrant culture. Among our favorite
places to see tribal dances and to browse authentic Native American
jewelry is the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. On our last visit,
my daughter and I overcame our self-consciousness, and joined
the swirling dancers performing in the center's plaza, letting
the drum beats guide our moves.
Stepping lively to Native tunes is just part of how to play your
way through the city, a place known for its lively festivals.
Watch hundreds of hot air balloons ascend, an extraordinary site,
during the Albuquerque International Balloon Festival, held annually
in October under never-ending blue skies. For the ultimate Albuquerque
adventure, join in on the fun and float above the desert in a
hot air balloon.
